Woodworking Tips & Trends

Butcher Block countertops are very easy to clean and maintain. We stand behind our products, each with a lifetime warranty. Here are some quick and easy tips to extend the beauty and life of your countertop.

Cleaning your butcherblock is very simple. To start, use a spatula or soft bristled brush to scrape away any food adhering to the counter. Then, use a dish cloth dipped in soapy water to wash the block’s surface. Next, wash and rinse the dish cloth, wring it out, then wipe the block clean. Lastly, use a dry cloth to dry the surface of the block. Make sure to dry up all water on the wood, because it might cause water spotting.

When cleaning your butcher block, avoid ammonia-based and bleach-based cleaning products like Lysol®, Fantastik®, 409®, Windex. Also, we don’t recommend using natural oils such as olive or vegetable oil, because they will oxidize and create a foul-smelling board. Additionally, never use standard mineral oil from a hardware store that isn’t rated food safe.

Maintaining your block is just as easy. To extend the life of a butcher block with a natural-oil finish, reapply butcher block oil or board cream every four weeks. Apply a generous amount of oil to the surface and use a cloth to spread it evenly. Smooth it across the entire top and sides of the block and let it stand overnight. In the morning, remove any excess oil or cream with a paper towel. This process will prevent the block from drying out and cracking.

Additionally, using both board cream and block oil is an extremely effective maintenance regimen. First, apply a cost of butcher block oil following the instructions above. Then apply a board cream to lock in the moisture, which leaves a silky wax barrier on the surface.
